Tai Chi Could Help Coronary Heart Disease Patients Recover
Article by Dr.Victor Marchione
Inside your heart, you have a mechanism called a baroreceptor reflex that helps to maintain your heart in a stable and constant state. What does that mean? It means when your heart beats an average of 100,000 times a day pumping life-giving blood to the rest of your body, the baroreceptor will jump in to lower your heart rate and blood pressure if it starts to get too high. A baroreceptor performs a very valuable job indeed. So, here’s some timely health advice: get going with some TaiChi to help your baroreceptors!
In a clinical trial performed at the Department of Sport and Health Science in Osaka, Japan, researchers set out to determine whether TaiChi training would result in a shift toward better baroreflex sensitivity and heart rate variability. Twenty patients with coronary heart disease were recruited for the study. Ten patients practiced supervised TaiChi training once a week and home-based TaiChi training three times a week, together with conventional cardiac rehabilitation for one year. The control group only received the conventional cardiac rehabilitation. The patients in the Tai Chi group showed statistically significant improvement in baroreflex sensitivity. The researchers concluded that Tai Chi training is beneficial in the treatment of coronary heart disease.
TaiChi may be just the exercise you are looking for to improve not only your heart health, but your overall health, too. Medical practitioners have concluded that Tai Chi is safe for people of all ages and levels of fitness. If you are an older adult, you might find TaiChi particularly suitable for maintaining good health, as the movements are low impact and put minimal strain on your muscles and joints.
So, how do you get started in Tai Chi? First of all — you don’t need any special equipment or clothing and you can perform Tai Chi anywhere. In fact, if you take a walk through your local park in the early morning, you might notice a group of people under the trees performing a set of Tai Chi exercises.
It is a little difficult to teach yourself the movements when you first begin. It’s probably best to find a qualified Tai Chi instructor to help you. An instructor can teach you specific positions and how to regulate your breathing. An instructor will also teach you how to practice Tai Chi safely, especially if you have injuries, chronic conditions, or balance or coordination problems.
